Hanging wedding flowers

Look up! There is a new trend for wedding installations, hanging wedding flowers from the sky.

Suspending wedding flowers from the ceiling is a popular trend for creating breath taking and unique décor at weddings. It adds a whimsical and romantic touch to the venue, creating a dreamy atmosphere for the ceremony or reception. Couples often opt for this trend to make use of vertical space, especially in venues with high ceilings, creating a visually stunning effect.

I am such a fan of this trend and I would highly recommend that couples consider spending their flower budget on this wow display. You and all your guests may not remember the flowers you had on the table centres at the wedding breakfast but that beautiful floral arrangement that is magically suspended from the ceiling! Now that’s a talking point that will always be remembered years after the dust has gathered on that wedding photo album.

These wedding designs can be used to highlight picture-perfect features of your venue, as backdrops for ceremony spaces, or as dynamic elements of your table designs. This kind of out-of-the-box thinking has enriched the way wedding flowers are being used creatively, and I hope it is a trend that will long continue. Fingers crossed this look will continue to be reinvented and interpreted in unique and wonderful ways.

There are various ways to incorporate hanging flowers into wedding décor. Read on for a few of my own wedding designs from real life weddings. As always wherever possible my designs do not use floral foam. All of these were created without the use of floral foam nofloralfoam

Imagine dancing underneath this beautiful wreath of flowers. These arrangements can hang from the centre of your venue/marquee or round a pole. This design was created using a hula hoop as a base. For this wreath design the lighter the frame the better because all the foliage and the flowers need to be wired on. I didn’t need to add a water source for these flowers, I chose hardy flowers for this design and ensured that they were thoroughly hydrated before the event. If water was required I would use mini test-tubes filled with water and then pop the flowers into them. Or oasis or floristry foam soaked in water. I created this to look free-flowing and organic with trailing foliage/twigs or the pops of yellow craspedia. These can be more structured by using a more dense collection of flowers.

Hanging individual stems or small clusters of flowers at varying heights can create a whimsical and ethereal ambiance. These strands can be hung using transparent fishing line or decorative ribbons for a seamless floating effect.

A floral curtain is a really elegant way of adding something above eye-level. For this venue, the wonderful Canada Lodge and Lakes the top table sits in front of this mirror. This makes it the perfect spot for hanging individual stems of wedding flowers. Although this looks really simple, it can be a bit of a challenge as the flowers don’t sit in water. Installation is fairly last minute and is really time consuming but just look at the final result, it really is worth the effort. This look is also suited to tall ceilings, perfect for marquees. I chose hardy flowers for this design and ensured that they were thoroughly hydrated before the event. You must pick robust stems which can be wired and won’t wilt easily.

Large floral arrangements suspended from the ceiling can serve as a captivating focal point. These installations can be adorned with a variety of flowers, greenery, and even additional elements like crystals, ribbons, or fairy lights to enhance the ambiance.

This luscious design was created for the guests to walk under at the entrance to the wedding reception at the stunning Llanerch Vineyard. It was a spot to stop and gather for drinks, a drink station was also set up here. I was lucky enough to set this up the day before the wedding, whenever possible please give your florist some space and time to do their thing, it will cause less stress for all involved. For this design I chose hardy flowers and ensured that they were thoroughly hydrated before the day. Mini test-tubes filled with water were added for some of the more delicate, thirsty stems such as the peonies. It still looked wonderful the next day.

Suspended floral clouds positioned over key areas such as the altar or dance floor can add a touch of romance and drama to the wedding space. These structures can be customized to complement the overall theme and colour palette of the wedding.

This was such a statement piece for this wonderful wedding I was lucky to be a part of. These hanging wedding flowers at Gileston Manor are designed to resemble a cloud. I constructed this piece to hang above the top table so all eyes were focused on this cloud of flowers sat above the new Bride and Groom. Again this look was created without the use of floral foam. I used a light but strong bamboo stick, covered in chicken wire that I then wired clumps of flowers onto. These floral clouds have a softer style of floral base than the other designs; such as the limonium and gypsophila I used here. They can be created in an ombre shade for something really unusual and romantic. If you want to see more of this truly beautiful wedding you can read all about it here.

Floral chandeliers combine the elegance of traditional lighting fixtures with the beauty of fresh flowers. These arrangements are typically suspended from the ceiling and can range from simple designs with a few blooms to elaborate creations cascading with floral abundance.

The lights shades of this wonderful venue Llanerch Vineyard are just asking to be decorated with flowers. I have created these kind of arrangements many times for weddings here. They create the showstopper for the marquee that my couples want. These overflowing garlands tied to the beautiful light shades are completely floral foam free, they really helped to frame the room. They were so effective and are a perfect place of the marquee to add flowers.

Garlands made of fresh blooms can be draped from the ceiling to create a natural and romantic canopy effect. These garlands can be interspersed with greenery or additional decorative elements for added texture and visual interest.

For this intimate wedding the couple wanted to hide the TV monitor which was attached to the wall. They hired the white drapery but wanted it to feel more natural and in keeping with the venue. I attached this loose garland to the length of the drapery, I ensured that the piece looked natural and loose, not at all rigid. I added flowers across the garland using flower picks as a water source. Again, no floral foam was used in the creation of this showstopper. It really enhanced the natural atmosphere at the lodge.

When implementing this trend, it's essential to work closely with your florist who can bring your vision to life while ensuring that the arrangements are securely suspended from the ceiling. Additionally, consider factors such as the venue's ceiling height, structural integrity, and any restrictions or guidelines provided by the venue management.

Well, there you go. A few ideas for your Pinterest collection. What do you think? Are hanging wedding flowers your thing? They really do give that wow factor many of my couples are looking for. If you like what you see, feel free to get in touch to discuss your wedding ideas.
